Toledo has not released a depth chart since the preseason got underway, but things are starting to clear up. Based on observations and conversations I've had, here's how I believe the two-deep will look when it comes out next week.
QB: Owens, Woodside. I am told true freshman Logan Woodside has progressed well from the spring. He'll be the No. 2 here. Will be interesting to see what the staff does if something happens to Owens or Woodside. Do they pull Michael Julian from redshirt? Maybe feed Dwight Macon reps? There's a lot of moving parts.
RB: Fluellen, McDowell. Coach Matt Campbell said the other day McDowell is the No. 2 for now. I don't see that lasting for longer than a few weeks. True freshman Kareem Hunt, who missed a week or so of camp with an injury, is too talented. That, and McDowell has a history with fumbling issues.
WR-X: Russell, Adams. Just a hunch on true freshman Rodney Adams cracking the two-deep. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised to see him redshirt.
WR-Z: Macon, Olack. A couple of guys with high upside but minimal production to this point. Both will get solid playing time.
WR-M: Reedy, C. Jones. Freshman Corey Jones has received high praise.
LT: Hendershot, Lisowski/Norton
LG: Myers, Lisowski/Henry
C: Kerin, Lisowski
RG: Mancz, Lisowski/Henry
RT: Nelson, Lisowski/Norton
*Other linemen will appear on the two-deep, but this is what the hierarchy is. Lisowski can play anywhere on the line, from what I surmise, with the possible exception of left tackle. The coaches are high on redshirt freshmen Henry and Norton. I don't see anyone else factoring at this point.
TE: Zmolik, Rosenbauer. Kind of a forgotten position in UT's spread attrack, but Zmolik has a chance to catch 20 balls and be a prime red zone target.
DE (Leo): Elliott, Bush
DT: M. Moore, O. Jones
DT: Hester/Collins *Elijah Jones (blood clot) would start here
DE: Smith, Covington. Campbell said Covington is good enough to start.
Star: Voss, Emilien
Mike: Murdock, Harper. Harper moved here from fullback in the aftermath of Jaylen Coleman's knee injury. Incidentally, Coleman could come back this year, Campbell said. Initial prognosis was less optimistic.
Will: Sylvestre, Bush. Ray Bush is getting reps here and at Leo.
CB: Norrils, Rogers. Campbell said true freshman Dejuan Rogers "is maybe as good as any corner as we've had here."
CB: Dukes, Haynes. True freshman Jordan Martin should factor here within a few weeks. Dukes, at 5-foot-9, does not fit the mold this coaching staff is looking for in the secondary. They want long guys. Haynes and Martin are long.
SS: Madison, D. Johnson. Campbell called Ross Madison the "ring leader" of the secondary. Jordan Haden, who is out four weeks with a fractured collar bone, would probably have been the No. 2 here.
FS: Whitaker, Larkins. I sense this battle, competitive in the spring, has turned one-sided.
