I stopped at the Michigan Welcome Center on northbound I-75 south of Monroe Sunday morning. While there, I noted that the tourist information counter was closed, with a sign stating that it's always closed Sundays and Mondays. Presumably these are the days the budget-challenged state of Michigan considers to be the least busy for inbound tourist travel, and they're probably right. But if saving money is that important, why the heck were several banks of floodlights in the gated-off area burning brightly away? Memo to MDOT: The personnel budget isn't the only place you can save money. The electricity bill can be one, too.
