Toledo police recovered two spent 40-caliber shell casings from near the baseball diamond at South Toledo's Highland Park, according to a report.
Officers also found three more 40-caliber casings.
Toledo police were called to the park, at South and Woodsdale, just after 6 p.m. Monday on a report of shots fired.
A group of young men told police they were playing basketball when another group of males, believed to be members of the Recc Squad, a South Toledo Folk-affiliated gang, "started having words" with them.
The men playing basketball got into a car and reported seeing two of the suspected gang members pull guns from their waistbands. The men in the car were driving away when one of the suspect gang members got in front of the car and was struck by the vehicle, according to the report.
Witnesses told police the gun flew across the hood of the car and a second man started shooting, the report states.
The man driving the vehicle caused an accident, but told police he kept driving "because he was in fear for his life."
No charges have been filed.
