*UPDATE: Bond for Whittaker was set at $25,000. He remains in the jail and is to appear in court again on Dec. 28 for a preliminary hearing.
A Toledo man left his state-issued ID with a gas station clerk who he attempted to rob Tuesday morning, making his arrest quick and easy, police said.
Brenton Whittaker, 27, of 3307 Auburn, is being held in the Lucas County jail, pending arraignment, for one count of robbery.
A man went to a Kroger Fuel Mart, 4606 Monroe St., at 6:35 a.m. today, giving a clerk his ID, requesting a cash transfer.
The clerk told the man they can't do that. The man left his ID, walked back to his car, and came back passing the clerk a note demanding all of the cash, indicating that he had with him a gun and was willing to shoot the clerk.
The clerk instead walked away from the window and called 911. The man fled in his vehicle.
Whittaker was arrested by police less than two hours later at his home, police said.
An arrest warrant indicates that he was positively identified through his state ID and by the two clerks who were working at the time of the robbery.
