Blade Religion Editor TK Barger originally covered a story about how Sylvania resident Joni Meyer-Crothers organized a collection and donation drive at Sylvania Area Family Services, for Hurricane Sandy Victims. Mrs. Meyer-Crothers runs a blog www.freetastesgood.com, and is also known for being on TLC’s Extreme Couponing.
A connection with Times Square Church in New York City led her to collect donations two weeks ago in Sylvania, which she said was very successful.
Mrs. Meyer-Crothers said the event filled six trucks, full to the top.
“The community was amazing,” she said, via email. “We raised enough funds for the trucks and the fuel to get everyone there.” The churches who received the donations were located in Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island.
“It was a miracle and only something God could do. It was amazing to see the cars lining the street,” Mrs. Meyer-Crothers said, adding that at one time, there were more than 30 vehicles lined up, ready to make donations.
More than thankful for the support of the community, she said many organizations bonded together, on collection day.
“It took everyone to pull this off,” she said. “Even the Sylvania Township Fire Department showed up when it got dark to give us light. Very cool and still I stand in awe of the amazing turnout and help we received.”
