This afternoon concluded week one of the "Watch List" period, which continues through next Friday.
Some college football fans seem to get whipped into a frenzy over the watch lists, but there are others (and I know a few reporters in this category) who put about as much stock in watch lists as they would in Enron shares.
Still, here's the appeal of watch lists: It's fodder for projection and prediction. Like recruiting coverage, it sets a basis and a standard for expectations of a player. Even when it seems as if everyone and his brother is on a watch list. (It's got that Oprah feel: "You're on a watch list! You're on a watch list! You're on a watch list, too!")
The first set of watch lists released this week include only four players from Michigan:
Maxwell Award (nation's top college football player): Devin Gardner, QB; Taylor Lewan, OT
John Mackey Award (nation's top tight end): Devin Funchess
Lou Groza Award (nation's top place kicker): Brendan Gibbons
Outland Trophy (nation's top interior lineman): Taylor Lewan
Also, there's work being done on Schembechler Hall this summer, and I managed to get a few photos while I was on campus yesterday.
Cranes on State Street:
What's left of the museum area of Schembechler Hall. Nice touch with the captains portraits still hanging on the upper wall.
