ANN ARBOR - Fun with uniforms, part 742, starring the Michigan football team.
Michigan unveiled its uniforms for the Outback Bowl today and though they might not be as gaudy as some of the collegiate counterparts, the togs for the New Year's Day bowl game will come with some tinkering, including a helmet update.
It's more matted and less along the lines of the shininess of Notre Dame and Michigan State's baubles. Though the ubiquitous wings on the helmet are sparkly.
"I'm not opposed to the matte," offensive lineman Patrick Omameh said. "I'm cool with the matte."
Jordan Kovacs didn't model the uniforms - though his likeness, in mannequin form, was on display today in Ann Arbor.
"I think it's fun," Kovacs said. "It's something different, it looks good. It doesn't really matter to me what we wear, but I think these uniforms look nice and I think my teammates do, as well."
Will the Wolverines reach Oregon or Maryland levels of uniform variety?
"I don't think, with Coach Hoke, you have to get too carried away with it," Kovacs said.
