Senior defensive tackle Chris Jones was named Mid-American Conference East Division defensive player of the week, the league announced Monday.
The Brownsville, Ind., native had five tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, and also had a quarterback hurry in the Falcons’ 37-12 win over Miami Saturday. The RedHawks entered that contest averaging 24.8 points and 394.5 yards per game, but were limited to just 12 points (and only one touchdown) as well as 256 total yards, including three net yards rushing on 20 carries.
This season Jones has been responsible for 25 tackles, and 17 of those tackles have resulted in no gain or negative yardage -- to the tune of minus-74 yards in losses for Bowling Green opponents. The eight "positive" plays have gained just 25 yards, and none of those plays has gained more than five yards.
Jones, who now has recorded at least one sack in six straight games, also earned this honor after BG's games against Florida and Idaho. Last week sophomore safety Ryland Ward won this award after the Akron victory.
