BG's Joyce saves a life Monday in Phoenix

Former Bowling Green State University baseball player Jim Joyce, better known as a major-league umpire, saved a life thanks to his quick thinking and fast action at Chase Field in Phoenix Monday.

The story, in a nutshell: Joyce arrived at Chase Field Monday to prepare to umpire that night's game between the Diamondbacks and Miami. On his way to the umpires' clubhouse, he saw a D-Backs employee have a seizure, then fall to the ground.

Joyce quickly started performing CPR on the women, something he told reporters he learned while a student at Toledo's Central Catholic High School.

Joyce stayed with the women until someone arrived with an AED, and the woman was taken to a hospital where doctors say she could return home by the end of this week.

Many Tigers fans remember Joyce as the umpire who blew the call at first base on the potential final out of Armando Galarraga's "perfect" game in 2010.

But personally, I hope this event will become Joyce's lasting legacy, rather than one call during a regular season game that even the aggrieved party, Galarraga, already has forgiven.
