Erica Donovan, a former Toledoan who played basketball for one season at Notre Dame Academy before moving to Texas, will transfer from North Carolina State to join the Falcons, coach Jennifer Roos announced Monday.
Donovan will sit out the 2012-13 season per NCAA regulations and will retain three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Donovan is a 5-11 guard who played in all 35 games off the bench for N.C. State in 2011-12, her lone season with the Wolfpack. She averaged 4.9 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, playing 14.8 minutes per contest. She shot 37 percent from the floor and made 16 of her 50 three-point field-goal attempts. She led the team in scoring three times on the season, including in her collegiate debut when she had 11 points in a win against Southeast Missouri State.
Donovan also scored in double digits in home wins over Jacksonville (13 points) and Alabama (10). The Wolfpack went 19-16 overall last season, and advanced to the second round of the WNIT. North Carolina State finished with a 5-11 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference, but posted wins over Florida State and top-seeded Duke in the league tournament, before falling to Georgia Tech in the semifinal round.
“We are extremely pleased to announce the addition of Erica Donovan to our program,” Roos said in announcing the signing. “She made a significant impact on the court at North Carolina State as a freshman, and I expect her to make an impact with our team during her three years of remaining eligibility and also immediately in her year of residency.
“Erica is a tremendous athlete and has the ability to score in a variety of ways from the arc, slashing to the hoop and creating in the lane. She has family in Toledo as well as in Texas, and I look forward to having her and her family become a part of the Bowling Green community as avid supporters.”
Donovan is a graduate of John Jay High School in Northside, Texas, who was a 2011 Texas McDonald’s All-American as well as a McDonald’s All-America Nominee. ESPNU HoopGurlz ranked her the number-26 wing player in the class of 2011, and the Premier Basketball Report listed her as the 24th-best overall player in the state of Texas.
Donovan averaged 20.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 4.2 steals per game in her senior year, helping the Mustangs to a 31-6 overall record. In her junior season, she had 19.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg and 2.5 spg as John Jay advanced to the state semifinals, and earned all-state honors. In her sophomore season, Donovan was the District 28-5A co-MVP after averaging 18 points and 13 boards per game.
As a freshman at Notre Dame, Donovan earned All-City League third team honors by averaging 11.7 points and a team-leading 8.2 rebounds per game.
Donovan majored in criminology at N.C. State and is interested in majoring in criminal justice at BGSU.
