Zack Denny, a 6-2 shooting guard from Valley View High School in Germantown, Ohio (near Dayton), verbally committed to join the Bowling Green men's basketball team Friday. Denny is expected to sign with the Falcons in November and join the program for the 2013-14 season.
"I visited the campus about a month ago, and it has been my top choice ever since I visited," Denny said in a phone interview Friday. "I like the coaches, and I like the campus. I think it's a great fit for me. The facilities are great, and I really have made a connection with the coaches."
NCAA rules prohibit the BG coaching staff from talking about potential recruits until they sign their letter of intent.
Last season Denny averaged 28.8 points per game for the Spartans while adding six rebounds, six steals and three assists per game. Denny received All-Ohio special mention in Division II last season and All-Ohio honorable mention as a sophomore, when he averaged 24.5 points, six rebounds and three steals per contest.
Denny has been named the Southwest Buckeye League player of the year in the Southwestern Division each of the past two seasons.
"Zack is a scorer, first and foremost," Valley View High School coach Ben Buehner said. "He can slash and get to the basket whenver he wants. But for his AAU team, Ohio Red, he is used more as a shooter, and he is cabable of doing that, too."
Denny's Ohio Red team includes a number of familiar names to area basketball fans, including Marc Loving of St. John's Jesuit (Ohio State verbal), Whitmer's Nigel Hayes, and two University of Toledo verbals, Jordan Lauf of Napoleon and Zach Garber of Vanlue.
“For my high school team I have to do a little bit of everything,” Denny said. “For my AAU team we have other guys who can do that, so my job is to come off screens and knock down outside shots.”
Denny enters his senior year at Valley View just 38 points behind the school’s all-time leading scorer, his older brother Rick. who plays golf for Wright State. Zack Denny’s single-game high of 42 points is a school record.
Denny is the first basketball player to verbally commit to the Falcons for the 2013-14 season.
