The BGSU men’s basketball team will play a familiar opponent in its 2011 BracketBuster game.
The Falcons will travel to Youngstown State to take on the Penguins, a team BG has faced in closed-door scrimmages the past two years, the school and ESPN announced Monday. The game will be played on Saturday, Feb. 19, with tipoff time at the Beeghly Center to be determined.
This pairing marks the second consecutive season and sixth time in nine years that the Falcons’ opponent for the series comes from the Horizon League. Last year BG beat Valparaiso 87-70.
Youngstown State currently is 7-14 overall and 1-10 in the Horizon League. The Penguins have split four games against Mid-American Conference opponents, beating Buffalo and Toledo at home while losing on the road to Akron and Kent State. BG is 0-2 against Horizon League opponents this season, having lost to Detroit and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Bowling Green holds an 8-2 edge in the all-time series with Youngstown State. The last meeting came on Dec. 11, 2004 in a "return game" from Bracket Busters, and BG prevailed at the Beeghly Center 81-59.
Contractually, as part of the Bracket Buster series YSU will play a "return game" at Bowling Green either next season or the year following. The Falcons will play their "return" game from last season's contest against Valparaiso at a date to be determined during the 2011-12 season.
The Falcons have a fairly successful Bracket Buster series history, going 5-3 in in Bracket Buster contests (and having won three of the last four) and 6-1 in the "return games."
