The Tigers have signed Mike Cervenak as a free agent and added him to the Mud Hens roster.
Cervenak has several local ties. He is a native of Trenton, Mich., and he played collegiately at the University of Michigan.
Originally Cervenak was not drafted and played for the Chillicothe Paints in the independent Frontier League from 1999-2000. He then was signed by the New York Yankees and has played a number of years in Triple-A.
Cervenak played for Fresno in the Pacific Coast League from 2004-06 (he led the PCL with 103 RBIs in 2005), then spent time with Norfolk (2007), Lehigh Valley (2008-09), Buffalo (2010) and New Orleans (2011-12).
In 2008 Cervenak played in 10 games for the Phillies and went 2-for-13 (.154) with an RBI.
Last September Cervenak played for the Czech Republic team in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic. This spring he played for the 7-Eleven Lions of the Chinese Professional Baseball League.
The 36-year-old Cervenak is in the Mud Hens' lineup tonight as the starting third baseman.
