OK, here is the latest change: The Mud Hens have placed C Max St-Pierre on the inactive list to deal with "family issues." There is no timetable for his return. He will be replaced on the roster by C Jeff Kunkel, who hit .239 in 25 games for the Mud Hens last season.
Entering this 2011 season, the Mud Hens catchers will be Kunkel and John Murrian, who has played just 17 games above Hi-A ball before this season.
Here's the starting lineup for Thursday's season opener at Louisville:
- Scott Sizemore, 2B
- Timo Perez, LF
- Andy Dirks, RF
- Ryan Strieby, 1B
- Scott Thorman, DH
- Danny Worth, 3B
- Clete Thomas, CF
- Cale Iorg, SS
- John Murrian, C
I asked manager Phil Nevin a variety of questions, and you can see many of his answers in the story that will appear in tomorrow's paper. Here are a couple of bonus nuggets that you will NOT see in the paper ...
On not having a true "third baseman" on the roster: "Danny [Worth] will play a lot of third base, but he'll also play shortstop once in a while and second base once in a while. Argenis Diaz will see a lot of playing time, too, playing all three infield spots (second, short and third).
"As to our defense on the left side of the infield, with Danny, Cale [Iorg] and Diaz, I dare you to find a better defense on the left side anywhere. They all have great range, great hands and great throwing arms."
On the situation with the four inactive players: "Max St-Pierre is dealing with a family issue, and I'm not sure when he will return. The three pitchers [RHPs Brooks Brown, Luis Marte and Jose Ortega] are in extended spring training. I think Ortega is further along in his rehab, so he probably won't be on the disabled list as long."
