“I BELIEVE.” That‘s what a man shouted while using an American Flag as a cape on Sunday at the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Perrysburg.
“I believe,” an full dining and bar area shouted back for the chant that ended with “I believe that we will win.”
Perrysburg caught World Cup fever watching the United States take on Portugal Sunday evening. At the beginning of the game, there was a group of people waiting for seating, which finally opened up.
As I‘m sure was the case all over Perrysburg bars and in living rooms, families and friends gathered around TVs to watch the internationally loved men’s soccer tournament taking place in Brazil. My wife, friends, and I wanted to take in the atmosphere at Buffalo Wild Wings and it didn‘t disappoint.
Some there wore tight USA body suits, others wore USA bandannas, or flags.
Moaning each time there were goals just missed by the Americans, cheering for saves by U.S. goalie Tim Howard, and even a loud laugh at Cristiano Ronaldo for an awful shot attempt that didn’t come close to the net punctuated the vibes through the game in the restaurant. Nothing came close to the screams and cheers after U.S. goals though.
It was awesome to all be on the same page. A lot of time, when you go out to watch big sporting events, you don‘t have that kind of reaction and participation. Ohio State and Michigan games in this area typically have fans on both sides badgering each other. Even Cleveland and Detroit professional sports can cause spats and arguments in Perrysburg. That is why on Sunday it was fun to have clearly everyone there on the same page.
The crowd was so intense my wife was even able to start the “U-S-A” chant going shortly after a goal that the entire bar participated in.
I’m sure you know the ending was very disappointing for United States, as Portugal tied the game 2-2 in the final 30 seconds of the match. Most at Buffalo Wild Wings already had tabs paid and quickly left after about two hours of excitement and cheering with friends.
Although the ending left a bad taste in the mouths of those watching, it was awesome to have chants and energy cheering together for the country‘s soccer team.
