MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Mitt Romney is scheduled to speak inside a factory here that makes natural gas compressors, so on my way to the campaign site I turned into the town square.
I expected to see a monument to George Washington, the occupant of the Virginia estate after which Mount Vernon is named, but found this monument instead. It's dedicated to the "War of the Great Rebellion." Mount Vernon is about one hour east of Columbus.
Romney's visit is hosted by Ariel Corp., which manufactures reciprocating natural gas compressors. Tapping into the burgeoning domestic natural gas industry in eastern and southeastern Ohio is a major campaign emphasis of Romney.
