Hunters play big role in feeding the needy

The Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) program provides a highly nutritional addition to the often modest fare served at many outlets that feed the disadvantaged, by adding meat to the menu. With a minimum of 50 pounds of processed meat per deer, each harvested deer donated by hunters will provide 200 meals.

FHFH is a national organization, and the Northwest Ohio Chapter serves Fulton, Lucas, Ottawa, Wood and Hardin counties. To get involved and help out, check out the FHFH.org website where the names, phone numbers and email addresses of the program's leaders will put you in touch with them.

Wild rivers celebrated in award-winning book

   Jo Deurbrouck's "Anything Worth Doing" is a true story about the lives and adventures of a pair of Idaho raft guides, set in the framework of the wild rivers that are the center of their unique existence. The duo are very different in age and background, yet connected by the wild waterways they travel. The story focuses on the Salmon River, the last lengthy, undammed wilderness whitewater river in the lower 48 states. Since it is unbridled, the river rages each spring when the high water hits. The book was selected for the 2012 National Outdoor Book Award, with the review committee saying: “You’ll find yourself glued to the pages as Deurbrouck deftly steers the narrative to a building climax. This is an impressive piece of work and a welcomed addition to river literature and lore.”
